The Dangers of Texting and Driving

The invention of cell phone has made people’s lives more convenient. Moreover, with the rise of smartphones, everything can be done with just a tap on the touch screen. Cell phones have become an important part of our lives, but when used improperly, these might cost us our lives. More than 700 million messages are sent in the US alone on a daily basis, and the number exponentially increases with the rolling out of more high-end mobile phones.

Aside from these, smartphones offer chances to do several different things at the same time. We can save a lot of precious time because of this. We can check e-mails, chat with friends, browse the Internet for mobile retail sites, purchase products, pay our bills, log in to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and many other benefits. All these with just one amazing gadget smaller than the PC!

With the benefits come some disadvantages too. In a poll conducted by an insurance company, a whopping 67% of teenagers do texting while driving, and 37% of the respondents have been extremely distracted by their phones, either by texting or making calls. With these figures, we can infer that young people are more likely to be tempted to use their cell phones even when driving. So what do we do? Know the dangers of texting while driving and spread the word.

  • A number of health-related problems could arise from texting while driving. Some of these are the “text thumb”, poor posture and blood circulation issues.
  • Message security issues could also arise. If you are using a location-based platform, your wireless internet access could possibly be not secured.
  • A great extent of distraction can be experienced by the driver and this could cause accidents on the road.
  • Vehicular accidents which resulted from texting while driving can lead to paralysis of the body or on the extreme case, death.
  • When you are distracted, you could be an easy target for car burglars and thieves. Since you are caught off guard, you might fall victim to their evil scheme.

Driving should be considered as one serious task that must not be shrugged off. Of course, the driver’s safety is of utmost importance when talking about texting and driving. It would be better to turn off your cell phone while on the road to evade the temptation of peeking on your phone for any text message or incoming calls.
